If a high school notebook filled with sketches were to tell of great things to come, one name will have emerged from all the colors and lines: MARC RANCY.
Marc Rancy has always known that he had a flair for colors, lines, sketches and drawings but he never thought that it will be his life's passion. He knew that he would rather draw than listen during lectures and is most at peace having a piece of drawing material in his hand, capturing the world's images through hs eyes. He would also enjoy leafing through fashion magazines giving critiques to gowns and suits he would see celebrities wearing on TV. But it was only during his high school graduation ball that he would eventually mix the two hobbies together. At only 17, He designed his own suit that he would wear for the big night, and it came as no surprise that he would end up winning the "Best Dressed-Male" award that night.
He spent the first two years of his college life at De La Salle University taking up Interdisciplinary Business Studies but decided to pursue what he really wants: Drawings. Lines. Colors. Art. He transferred to the recently established De La Salle - School of Design and Arts located along Pablo Ocampo Street, Manila, taking up Multimedia Design. He was indeed having a good time, creating cartoon strips, video commercials and learning photography. But seeing his friends taking up Fashion Design seemed to have intensified his calling towards the world of couture. He wanted to be practical and keep his career options open and decided to just continue pursuing his degree. But on his spare time, he devoted himself entirely to his passion. He would go on fashion shows and self-studied intensively what are the current trends, the right colors for the season and of course, who are the best designers that he would look up to for inspiration.
He eventually took formal lessons from some of the most formidable names in the business. His training would of course include De La Salle- School of Design and Arts and is also educated at the Fashion Institute of the Philippines.
He actually started this in a small scale way, designing gowns for JS proms and graduation balls and then eventually decided to establish his own label. His label currently finds its home just south of Manila and has highly skilled laborers to service his clients.
When asked what he thinks a designer should aim for, Marc Rancy has these words to say:
"As a designer, my utmost goal is not to create a piece of clothing that people would notice but a piece of clothing that would put on a pedestal the person wearing it. At the end of the day, it is not the dress that should be noticed but the person wearing it. I feel that I have done my job as a designer having achieved that. I want to be able to make my client feel good about herself through what I have created- that the dress is beautiful because she is beautiful, and not the other way around."
The high school kid doodling in his notebook has definitely gone a long way. Watch and see as Marc Rancy carves his name into the walls and beams of the Philippine Fashion world.
